Northern Europe drives Sunshine Coast’s 14% growth in international visitor arrivals



The Sunshine Coast has recorded a 14% growth in international visitors for the year till March 2015, double Queensland’s growth rate of 7%. The strong figures build on the recent announcement of 9.2% increase in domestic travel to the Sunshine Coast.

Northern EuropeThe double-digit growth saw the Sunshine Coast attracting 258,000 visitors for the year.

The figures were announced today as part of the International Visitor Survey (IVS) released by Tourism Research Australia.

Key growth markets were northern Europe, with Germany increasing by 37%, Scandinavia up 19.2%, and UK up 15.2%.

New Zealand continued to be a powerful contributor, up 12.8%, while Canada’s rise of 13% highlighted the potential for growth from the North American market.

Simon Ambrose, CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) said that SCDL’s targeting of the German market with major promotions in 2014-15 was paying dividends for the whole region, with Noosa, the Hinterland and Rainbow Beach areas particularly benefiting from SCDL’s international marketing campaigns.

“The Sunshine Coast is a ‘natural’ for markets such as Germany and the Scandinavian countries because they love the region’s rich diversity,” said Mr Ambrose.

“The beaches are a major incentive, but they are also attracted to trekking, exploring the Hinterland, markets and the region’s food culture. Our promotion of Australia’s Nature Coast has also produced considerable traction in Europe.

“A $200,000 campaign in New Zealand has been responsible for producing double-digit inbound growth for all areas of the Sunshine Coast.

“Last week’s announcement of Qantas’ return to the Sunshine Coast, will enable us to attract even more international visitors in the future, including major incentive and conference groups.”

Glass House Mountains Eco Lodge owner, Keith Murray, said that the Sunshine Coast Destination promotions in Europe had contributed significantly to the growth of his property’s international business.

“Over the past two years our international business has increased over 35%, and that has risen to an 88% increase in July 2015 international bookings compared to July 2014,” said Mr Murray.

“Overseas bookings now represent 32% of our business, with our strongest market being Europe, which makes up 55% of all our overseas stays, followed by NZ with 23%. The strongest country of source is Germany, followed by UK then Netherlands.

“Building our international market has taken patience and persistence, but with the support of Tourism and Events Queensland and SCDL we have really been able to build a strong market for the Sunshine Coast in Europe.

“The more recent Australia’s Nature Coast promotion from Sunshine Coast Destination has driven home to the Northern European market the incredible diversity of experiences available here on the Sunshine Coast/Fraser Coast, made easier by being just over an hour’s drive north of Brisbane.

“The Germans and Dutch just love the Hinterland, the nature and being able to chill out without the overcrowded tourist spots in many parts of Australia. They are quite discerning in their choice of holiday stays, use their mobile devices often and are quite often prepared to stay the extra night if they like the location.”

Construction Begins On Sunshine Coast CBD

Construction officially began today on a new central business district for the Sunshine Coast, which is forecast to create more than 30,000 permanent jobs in the region by 2040 and provide a $5.9 billion boost to the Queensland economy over the project‟s 20-year life.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk turned the first sod on the prime 53-hectare SunCentral Maroochydore development site, which promises to showcase excellence in urban design, technology and innovation, including some Australian firsts, such as automatic waste collection.

SunCentral Maroochydore‟s Chief Executive Officer John Knaggs said the unique development represented a coming of age for the region.

“The Sunshine Coast is already the second highest performing regional economy in Queensland and the fifth highest nationally,” Mr Knaggs said.

“With the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital due for completion at the end of this year along with the planned expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport, the new city centre at Maroochydore will ensure we are rising to the challenge of growth, with a clear focus on jobs.

“The Sunshine Coast population has risen from 65,000 to 335,800 in the past 40 years and by 2040, well over half a million people are likely to call the region home.”

The Council-owned land would deliver more than $300 million in public space and infrastructure to the people of the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the site on the former Horton Park Golf Club would be transformed over the next two decades to include commercial buildings, destination retail outlets, a premium hotel, civic facilities and an exhibition, convention and entertainment centre, with 40 per cent of the new city centre site dedicated to waterways and parkland.

“This is Australia‟s only greenfield CBD within an existing urban area, which provides us with the opportunity to build from scratch, a city centre that is able to meet the needs of people both now and in the future,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Applying our smart city framework – which includes digital solutions for the management of street lighting, car parking, water, power and signage that is detected by smartphones and other technologies, and where rubbish bins are emptied via automated underground tubes means SunCentral Maroochydore will become a nation-leading destination for innovative businesses.

“Importantly, given its significance to the Sunshine Coast, this is a project owned by the community. Independent expert analysis suggests our new city centre will grow our local economy by $4.4 billion over the life of the project.”

SunCentral Maroochydore‟s CEO said the project was vital to preventing urban sprawl on the Sunshine Coast and would deliver a viable commercial hub, public recreational facilities and an interconnected city.

“Urban sprawl has been a challenge on the Sunshine Coast for decades and SunCentral Maroochydore is about consolidating future development and delivering an outstanding city centre,” Mr Knaggs said.
